Mighty Mount Fuji didn’t bless Iron Lynx with luck in the sixth round of the FIA World Endurance Championship, the 6 Hours of Fuji.

Coming off strong performances in practice, the team landed P2 and P5 on the grid when the qualifying session was cancelled due to rain. Unfortunately, the #61 Mercedes-AMG LMGT3, driven by Martin Berry, was hit by a competitor who dive-bombed the pack into Turn 1. The resulting front-end damage was impossible to repair, which led to a DNF.

Starting from the front row, the #79 car had a difficult opening phase of the race due to minor contact with a hypercar, and was assessed a drive-through penalty for track limits. Johannes Zelger drove the opening stint and handed the car to Matteo Cressoni, who closed the gap by lapping consistently at the same pace as the leading pack.

Despite having to make an emergency fuel stop due to an untimely full-course yellow, Lin Hodenius was looking to fight back. Unfortunately, an appareant electrical sub-component issue caused the electrical system to shut down. The team was eventually able to resolve the problem, but the car was relegated to P13, several laps down.

Iron Lynx will be back in action in little more than a week, lining up as the main title contender in the European Le Mans Series finale at Portimão.

It’s very hard to find something to say after a race like this. Once again, we were fast and even had a good starting position. Both cars had the performance to fight at the front this weekend, but we came home empty-handed. It was especially hard to see the trio of Martin, Rui and Maxime not even have a fair chance due to someone else’s mistake. Now the full focus is on Portimão, but we are already looking forward to another chance in the final two rounds of the FIA WEC.
