IRON LYNX HAS HEARTBEAKING DAY IN SILVERSTONE ELMS RETURN

It was a heartbreaking weekend for Iron Lynx in the popular return of the European Le Mans Series at Silverstone. Before a stunning crowd of more than 100.000 people, the 4 Hours of Silverstone saw a high level of attrition with three red flags and an early finish due to heavy rain.

After taking a brilliant second place in Qualifying on Saturday, the #63 Mercedes-AMG LMGT3 was running fourth in the opening hour, with a solid drive by Martin Berry. Unfortunately, the Australian was heavily hit from behind and punted into the outside barriers. While the LMP2 car involved was held responsible and penalized, the Mercedes suffered terminal damage. Luckily, Berry exited the car under his own power, unscathed.

The #9 Iron Lynx Proton Oreca LMP2 finished in P7. Starting from second place, the car had the potential to fight for the podium. Unfortunately, Jonas Ried was forced to make an emergency pit stop for fuel right before the second red flag. A later spin and a penalty dropped Matteo Cairoli down the order. Maceo Capietto eventually fought back to seventh place.

While the European Le Mans Series will return in October with the Portimao finale, Iron Lynx will go back on track in a couple of weeks for the 6 Hours of Fuji.

It is a really hard day to take. The #63 team did a great job again and our fifth front row in qualifying is a testimony to that.

We had the pace to fight for the win in all conditions, so it hurts even more to be crashed out in such way and be out of title contention.

Honestly, were expecting a much harder decision from the Stewards considering the irresponsible move. Luckily, Martin was unharmed in the incident which is the most important thing. On the other hand, we couldn’t achieve our potential with the #9 car and we need to continue working.

We need to quickly put this weekend behind us and focus on the challenges ahead, with the WEC race at Fuji just under two weeks away. Having started far behind, we’ve made solid progress throughout the season. We now believe we’re capable of fighting at the front and aim to finish the WEC Championship on a high.
